State History Prize for Industrial Culture goes to a book from Altenburger Land

Since 2018, the Historical Commission of Thuringia and the Thuringian State Chancellery have been awarding the State Historical Prize for Industrial Culture in three categories every year. The current winners for 2021 include Lothar Wagner with his book, published by E. Reinhold Verlag, entitled 'Apollo-Werke - Pöhl-Werke - Stahlgusswerk. From 150 years of industrial history in Gößnitz".

The award ceremony will take place on 20 June 2022 in the Shedhalle in Pößneck. Thuringia's industrial history is inextricably linked with its cultural and political history. We therefore want to honour researchers and not least young academics for their innovative and high-quality work on industrial culture against the background of Thuringia's emergence into modernity and also encourage new work in this field. The prize also serves to promote networking within the academic study of the topic," said Thuringia's Minister of Culture and Head of the State Chancellery, Prof. Dr. Benjamin-Immanuel Hoff, who attended the event, gave a welcoming speech and presented the awards. Due to the restrictions caused by the coronavirus, the award ceremonies had to be postponed for the last two years, so the 2020 and 2021 winners were honoured in Pößneck.

In his award-winning book, Lothar Wagner traces the history of the Allendorf family's Apollo factory - founded in 1863 and the first metalworking company in the town of Gößnitz - the Pöhl tractor factory and the Nestmann steel foundry. In the 1920s, these three companies together employed around 1000 people. Rich illustrations provide an insight into a highly interesting chapter of Central German industrial history.
Lothar Wagner is a graduate engineer in chemical apparatus engineering. He joined Apollo in 1967 and held various technical management positions until 1990. Despite great difficulties, he and Gerhard Werner had the energy to ensure that the company did not go under during the turmoil of political change, but instead developed into a globally recognised company that was competitive even under market economy conditions, particularly in the field of heavy process pumps and pump systems. Lothar Wagner retired in 2013 and since then has been researching the history of the company, especially the industrial history of his home region.
