We were trusted to deliver a complex, heavy-duty process pump designed for a demanding high-temperature cracking process.
This application presented two key challenges: the high operating and design temperatures of approximately 375 °C, and the high proportion of shale ash with rock residues of up to 20 µm in grain size.
A robust, wear-resistant hydraulic solution was required. Selecting materials that could withstand the challenging operating conditions was also a core task in this project. However, Apollo was able to draw on its decades of experience and successful deliveries to quickly develop a suitable solution.
This was based on a horizontal, heavy-duty, radially split, two-stage process pump in accordance with API 610, which has been used successfully in shale mining for many years.
The Apollo KGRZ pump features a specially configured casing design fitted with hard-faced, highly wear-resistant inserts in critical, highly stressed areas.
This design comprises various components that can be easily dismantled and replaced when they reach a certain degree of wear. This enables quick maintenance and reduces downtime. The special back-to-back hydraulic arrangement of the impellers, with additional high-strength intermediate bearings, ensures optimum axial thrust compensation and smooth running, even under changing operating conditions and driving methods.
The semi-open impeller design with integrated back-blading ensures reliable operation even with high solids content.
Long-term, sustainable solutions that meet technical and economic requirements can only be realised through close cooperation between departments, direct customer consultation, and knowledge of the plant or process. This project reflected the good, open cooperation with the client and plant operator.
